"I don't need a patch test I have lashes done elsewhere all the time." - most new clients
Clients, truth is, the chances of you having an allergic reaction are rare.
However, just because you have had lashes before, does not mean you will not have a reaction at some point. This is because the main chemical in all eyelash adhesive (cyanoacrylate), is an irritant which you can become more sensitive over time. This means the more you are exposed to it, you may develop some kind of reaction. Also, different adhesive brands contain varying cyanoacrylate, so you could be more sensitive to certain brands.
Our hormones are constantly changing which can affect the way we react to things like eyelashes! This includes any medication we are on or have changed recently (including birth control), pregnancy, hayfever and illnesses. So it is a good idea to bear this in mind if you do suddenly experience a reaction.
When I say reaction - this doesn't have to mean an allergy, it can mean a sensitivity.
There is a difference between allergic reactions and sensitivities, but the symptoms can be very similar.

Most common reaction symptoms: redness, swelling, itching, irritation.
These reactions can be allergic or sensitive. Sensitivities will normally occur straight away during or after treatment and the symptoms listed above will be solely on the eyelids. A lot of people do suffer from minor sensitivities which are manageable and disappear within 24 hours. Another common sensitivity is bloodshot eyes which can be sore - (can also be from eye pads too close to the eye) and a temporary blocked nose, both can be caused by the adhesive fumes.
Allergic reactions are a lot more serious and can take up to 48 hours to occur. The symptoms listed above may expand over the whole face. They will NOT get better over time, meaning the lashes need to be removed immediately and medical advice could need to be seeked to ease symptoms.
What is a patch test?
So, a patch test is a 10 minute appointment where you will have a few lashes applied to one or both eyes. The lashes will be short so shouldn't be too visible and should be left on for 48 hours. Simple!
This also checks for reactions to eye pads or tape used under the eye - I have a few clients who have skin sensitivities to the gel eye pads so need to be taped instead!
"Can't I just sign something to say I opt out?" - clients who don't want to 'waste their time'
Clients and lash techs: Firstly, it is in the clients best interest to have these tests done. If an allergic reaction was to occur, it will be painful and can take days to weeks to resolve, also a waste of time and money.
Lash techs: You would need to check directly with your liability insurance for specific requirements regarding patch testing as most insurance companies will not accept a disclaimer form.
